VAZ engine series 11183: characteristics, malfunctions and tuning


Engine 11183 is the engine installed on the cheapest versions of budget VAZ cars: the Lada Kalina sedan (2001 - 2011) and the Lada Granta model that replaced it (2011). They replaced the Samara family of cars that had been produced for a long time.

The VAZ 11183 engine is a product of modernization of the well-known 2111 engine, which in turn replaced the outdated (carburetor) 21083.

Engine 11183 (another name for VAZ 21114 engine) differs from 2111 (cylinder capacity 1.5 liters):

  • height of the cylinder block;
  • increased piston stroke.

Due to this, the designers managed to increase the volume of the cylinders and increase the engine power. As a result of the work carried out, engine 11183 significantly improved its performance characteristics (reliability, environmental friendliness, etc.). Due to the fact that its assembly is carried out at various production sites of AvtoVAZ OJSC, the engine is known to car enthusiasts under the names:

Description


Like all previous models, the VAZ 11183 engine is a classic four-stroke, in-line, 4-cylinder power unit with an overhead camshaft.

The increase in cylinder volume was achieved through the use of a higher cylinder block than that of the prototype. Its height is 2.3 mm higher than the height of the 2111 engine block and is 197.1 mm (from the crankshaft axis to the top surface). The diameter of the cylinders did not change, but the dimensions and shape of the combustion chamber had to be changed.

The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy. A camshaft is installed in its upper part, and special ducts are cast in the lower part, designed to supply coolant to the combustion chambers. The same channels are also available in the cylinder block housing.

The crankshaft and camshaft of the engine are cast from cast iron, the pistons are made from aluminum alloy. Forged connecting rods (steel).

Appearance

The smile of the “laughing dolphin” became more open. The embossed hood, combined with a large air intake and a slanted “foglight” cut, makes the car’s exterior modern. The headlights seem to be connected by a chrome trim placed on the radiator grille. Large glass areas enable the driver and passengers to correctly assess the traffic situation and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

Second generation cars were produced in hatchback and station wagon body styles. The sedan ceased to exist, giving way to the Lada Grante.

The Kalina Cross received the greatest changes compared to previous modifications. This is an improved version of the model, with more outstanding technical characteristics, reinforced suspension, and increased ground clearance (182 mm).

The plant also produced the Sport modification. It features a lower ground clearance of 145 mm, which improves dynamic performance. A spoiler on the rear door and larger radius wheels (195/50 R16 and 185/50 R15) emphasize its sporty style.

Roof rails make the Kalina not only taller, but also more solid. This is also facilitated by the appearance of decorative plastic linings placed on the body.

Buyers are offered a choice of seven body color options:

There have been minor changes inside the car. The furnishings correspond to the budget class of the car, but nevertheless it looks quite decent. The appearance of round-shaped ventilation grilles, borrowed from VAZ’s partner Renault, is noticeable. The laconic interior is enlivened by silver-look inserts in various places in the cabin.

In the middle of the dashboard is the multimedia system display. It does not have any special technical sophistication, but is quite informative. In addition, various modifications have their own interior design. The “Cross” version can be trimmed with orange material inserts.

Despite the small dimensions of the Kalina 2 hatchback, its interior has good spatial volume. The luggage compartment cannot boast of a large size: 240 liters in the standard position, 550 liters when transforming the second row of seats.

Maintenance

The gas distribution mechanism is driven by a belt, which requires replacement every 45 thousand km. mileage In addition, valve clearances also require periodic adjustment.

A significant advantage of the VAZ 11183 engine is that if the drive belt breaks, hard contact of the valve with the piston surface is eliminated (the valves do not bend).

Maintenance that ensures long-term operation of the power unit comes down to:

  • regularly inspect the engine to detect oil and coolant leaks. If any defects are identified, they must be eliminated;
  • timely replacement of engine oil - every 15,000 km.

The Kalina family is small but friendly. Some are a little bigger, some are a little smaller, but together they can make it to the parade. The width and wheelbase are the same for all, as it should be for related models. But the length, height and ground clearance are different. Accordingly, the volumes and masses are different. The history of Lada models has seen long stagnation and a period of failure. In 2004, the release of the first Kalina from the assembly line ushered in a new era. Since then, new items appear almost every season, and the ranks of owners of the most popular car in Russia are growing from year to year.

The geometric dimensions of the body are important, but no less interesting is the volume of the trunk. All Kalina models are designed to allow the rear seats to be folded forward and increase luggage compartment space. In the ranks of Kalina there is another model - Lada Kalina City (Oka-3), made on the VAZ-1117 platform. It appeared in 2005 and for some time was considered a replacement for the Oka small car, but this assumption is incorrect. It has almost the same dimensions, height and width as other Kalinas, only the length is 3650 mm.

There is another dimensional indicator that is rarely interested in until they get stuck in a rut. At this point, some people discover the fact that the distance between the front wheels is different from the distance between the rear. This parameter is called: front and rear wheel track.
