Hyundai Solaris won't start; the starter turns, but doesn't engage.

The engines of Hyundai Solaris cars produced before 2022 are very similar in design. The reason for the inability to start the engine may be the failure of three different sensors, as well as disruptions in the electrical network and a breakdown of the canister purge valve. How to check all these elements is discussed further. We mean that the crankshaft rotates, that is, that the starter turns, and the Solaris may not start for one of six reasons. They are all listed below.

The video gives an example of how to start a car at -30.

What to do if Hyundai Solaris does not start

An article about what can be done if the Hyundai Solaris does not start: diagnostic measures, necessary actions. At the end of the article there is a video about what to do if the immobilizer does not see the Solaris key.

Simple and reliable, Hyundai Solaris can fail suddenly

: instead of a cheerfully purring engine, nothing happens when you turn the key... What could be the reason for engine failure and how to deal with it? Let's consider in detail all the possible options.

Diagnostics and troubleshooting in situations where the starter does not turn

The standard Hyundai Solaris operating manual contains step-by-step instructions that provide a complete algorithm of actions for all possible types of malfunctions.

Let's start with the most common: the crankshaft rotates slowly or the starter does not turn the engine.

These symptoms are typical for Hyundai Solaris with automatic transmission. Most often, simple steps will help: you need to move the gear lever to neutral or park. You may have to repeat the move several times - this usually resolves the problem.

One of the common reasons for the inability to start the engine is the complete or partial discharge of the battery

.
Having become accustomed to the flawless and flawless operation of the vehicle, many drivers forget about this. How to determine whether the battery charge level is sufficient to start the engine?

    First of all, you need to check the battery terminals.

Next, visually inspect the wires going to the starter: they should not have any signs of breakage and should be firmly connected to the terminals.

If there are no comments on two points, then turning on the light in the cabin will allow you to determine whether the battery needs charging. Dim lighting or turning off of the lights when you try to start the engine indicates a low battery.

  • You need to charge the battery or try to “light” the car from another vehicle.
  • If these steps do not solve the problem, you should pay attention to the immobilizer.

    Immobilizer

    – a security device that allows you to identify the owner and start the car only if the digital code in the key chip completely matches the data of the device itself. When the lamp lights up, the immobilizer signals that it does not see the key.

    There are several options for troubleshooting on site:

    Make several attempts to remove and insert the key - usually this method takes at least half an hour and gives a 100% guarantee of a positive outcome and starting the engine.

You can try to gain access to the engine using a duplicate key or its exact copy (usually included in the kit). If the engine was able to start the first time, then the reason is a faulty permanent key.

  • The immobilizer antenna may be faulty - it has failed due to wear or oxidation of the contacts. In this case, the signal that the key is genuine simply does not reach the ECU. Therefore, there are not many options - move the ignition switch or use WD-40 liquid to clean the contacts.
  • If none of these actions help, you need to call a tow truck and transport the Hyundai Solaris to a specialized center for diagnostics. For owners, this can result in unforeseen expenses: from replacing the immobilizer antenna or flashing it to purchasing a new computer or a special device - an immobilizer bypasser.

    Additionally, the cause of the malfunction may be:

  • Faulty starter;
  • Worn starter (armature) brushes;
  • Interturn short circuit of the windings or a break in the windings of the electric starter relay;
  • Interturn short circuit in the electric starter windings;
  • Blocking of the electric starter due to the installation of an abnormal alarm system;
  • Malfunction of the ignition switch contact group;
  • For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the selector is defective or broken.
  • These defects and breakdowns are complex cases, and it will not be possible to deal with them on the spot - you need tools, a lift or an inspection hole. Therefore, the vehicle must be delivered to a specialized service center for diagnostics.

    Diagnosis and troubleshooting in situations where the starter turns the engine

    The standard user instructions suggest a series of sequential actions if the crankshaft turns, but the engine does not start. The procedure involves:

    • Checking the fuel level;
    • Diagnostics of electrical circuits and terminal connections;
    • Coil diagnostics;
    • Checking the spark plugs;
    • Checking the fuel line;
    • Attempt to start the engine.

    In fact, it’s worth starting with checking the spark plugs: the Hyundai Solaris has four ignition coils, so there’s no need to check them - the probability of simultaneous failure is negligible, and it’s possible to diagnose a breakdown at an earlier stage - it is expressed in the “triple” of the engine, burning indicator on the dashboard and dips when pressing the accelerator. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the plastic cover, remove the coils from the spark plug well, unscrew and check the spark plugs:

    1. The candles are wet
      . This indicates that the fuel line is working properly, so we change the spark plugs.
    2. The candles are dry
      . In this case, the fuel pump may be faulty or not supplying the required pressure, or the fuel filter may be clogged. Replacing the fuel filter can solve the problem in most cases. You can also check the cleanliness of the air filter - perhaps the engine does not have enough air.

    If all the emergency measures and manipulations taken did not help, and the engine still does not start, you can check the sensors and valves, replace the fuel pump, and check the wiring. Each procedure is quite time-consuming and requires special equipment and tools.

    Diagnostics, replacement and repair of DBP sensor and thermometer

    On Hyundai Solaris, these two sensors can only function in conjunction with each other. Usually, for emergency troubleshooting, it is enough to swap these two sensors - this will allow you to quickly start the engine, provided that both elements are in good working order.

    However, if there is a breakdown in the DBP, you will not be able to start the engine. Reasons for DBP failure:

    • Air leakage due to the gap between the element and the inlet fitting;
    • Pipeline contamination;
    • Failure of the temperature sensor;
    • Breakage of internal wires or breakdown of a semiconductor;
    • The wire connection is broken.

    The main reason for DBP failure is a breakdown of the temperature sensor

    , so it is necessary to replace this element. Standard DBP diagnostics are carried out with the engine idling. In conditions where you need to drive “right now” and the engine is not running, this will not be possible.

    Diagnostics, replacement and repair of DPKV

    Crankshaft position sensor, synchronization sensor, TDC, or phase sensor are the names of the element that synchronizes the operation of the ignition system and the power system. If it fails, the ECU blocks engine operation.

    Before changing the DPKV, it is necessary to eliminate other possible causes of problems. If it is impossible to start the engine, perform computer diagnostics.

    Diagnostics, catalytic converter valve replacement

    Adsorber

    – a container with activated carbon or other substance that acts as a neutralizer and traps fuel vapors, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.

    You can check it using the error diagnostic system - the codes are stored in the controller’s memory.

    Diagnosis of wiring faults and replacement of coils

    The standard method of checking the serviceability of the wiring involves the presence of sparks on the spark plug: you need to remove the plastic cover, remove the coil from the spark plug channel, connect it to a spare spark plug and lean it against ground for a few seconds with the starter turned on.

    However, the lack of power to the ECU can only be diagnosed with special equipment (in this case, none of the coils work, so the internal combustion engine will not start).

    This is the main list of faults that may cause the Hyundai Solaris engine to fail to start. Usually, checking the underlying causes is enough to quickly fix the problem and start the car.

    If it is impossible to start it yourself, the manufacturer does not recommend pushing or pulling the vehicle - to avoid damage to expensive important components and assemblies of the vehicle, you should order a tow truck.

    Sometimes it happens that the engine does not start due to sensor failure. Usually, to urgently fix a breakdown, you can use the advice of changing the places of two devices, if both are working.

    However, if there is a breakdown in any of the sensors, you will not be able to start the car. Among the reasons causing the device to malfunction are:

    • Penetration of air into the gaps between the elements and the fitting.
    • Dirt getting into the pipeline.
    • Failure of one of the existing sensors.
    • Deformation or rupture of wires, leading to failure of the entire system.

    The picture shows the idle air control on the Hyundai Solaris (IAC).

    Sensor failure in this list is considered the main cause of the malfunction. In this case, it is necessary to replace this element as soon as possible. Diagnostics can be carried out independently with the engine idling. However, you won’t be able to replace the element yourself; therefore, you will still have to visit a service center.

    Catalytic converter valve not working

    – a container with activated carbon or other substance that acts as a neutralizer and traps fuel vapors, preventing them from entering the atmosphere.

    The canister valve is mounted between the intake manifold and the canister, providing ventilation. Intensive use of the vehicle leads to breakdown of the purge valve, and this, in turn, damages the fuel pump and makes it impossible to start the engine. The opening/closing of the valve is controlled by the ECU.

    You can check it using the error diagnostic system - the codes are stored in the controller’s memory.

    This valve is designed to provide ventilation in the system, and failure of the element leads to serious damage to the vehicle. As a result, if a malfunction occurs in the adsorber, the car engine will not be able to start.

    Hyundai Solaris won't start

    Added by avtorin on 01/04/2018

    In this article we will talk about why the Hyundai Solaris does not start. There can be a huge number of reasons for this, however, they are all quite typical for most cars in this class. So, Solaris won’t start – reasons and troubleshooting methods.

    To begin with, it’s worth clarifying that “won’t start” is a very loose concept, and therefore, let’s divide the article into several subsections that will help narrow down the troubleshooting area.

    The most common option is the first one, so let's start with it.

    Hyundai Solaris does not start - the starter does not turn.

    So we come to our car, turn on the ignition, then turn the key and... Nothing happens! This situation leaves most drivers in a slight shock, and some are generally very frightened, however, there are not so many reasons for this.

    Let's start with something simple. If the Solaris does not start and the starter does not turn, then first of all we pay attention to whether the immobilizer lamp is on. This is the most common problem, a lot of immobilizer antennas have been replaced under warranty, but for some, this element is outliving the warranty repair period, which means it will have a long life. Unfortunately, only a tow truck and a competent diagnostician will help us here. The problem will not necessarily be in the antenna, maybe in the alarm unit.

    If the car does not start and the starter clicks when you turn the key, then we can say with confidence that

    You need to dig towards the faulty starter. In most cases, it helps one to turn the key, and the other to “bring him to his senses” with light blows (for example, with a spray gun) on the starter. The whole problem lies in worn out brushes; replacing them will help.

    However, if the starter clicks, this may also indicate a malfunction of the starter as a whole. If the starter does not click, and the Solaris, of course, does not start, then you need to check: the solenoid relay, the starter fuse, and also listen to whether anything clicks at all. The thing is that the starter in any case must be powered through the relay; it must also click when the key is turned.

    If even the starter relay does not click, then we begin to dig towards an abnormal alarm, because most electricians install a starter interlock. Unfortunately, the average driver is unlikely to understand this situation, so we will not consider this point further. Of course, you shouldn’t ignore the malfunction of the ignition switch.

    Among other things, on cars with an automatic transmission, a malfunction of the gear selector is often encountered. She simply does not understand its position, and the engine can only be started in neutral or in park.

    Solaris does not start - the starter turns.

    If the Solaris does not start, but the starter turns, then there are many more reasons, and finding the fault, of course, is much more difficult. In addition, this is not a VAZ 2114, so there are a number of inconveniences. In any case, we need to narrow the search as much as possible, and to do this we immediately unscrew the candles.

    The spark plugs are wet - the Hyundai Solaris will not start.

    If Solaris does not start and the spark plugs are wet, then we can say that the fuel system is working normally and there are no problems with it. This means the problem is in the ignition system. To begin with, we remember how long ago we changed the spark plugs, if less than 10 thousand kilometers ago, then we forget, if not, then we change the spark plugs.

    Next we have the ignition coils, all of them cannot fail, so we practically forget this option. As a consolation, you can check the resistance of the coils relative to each other; they should be at least approximately close.

    Unfortunately, it is impossible to fully check the ignition system on a car with a coil on a spark plug on your own, so this is where the capabilities of the average person end.

    The spark plugs are dry - the Hyundai Solaris will not start.

    If the Hyundai Solaris does not start, the starter turns, but the spark plugs are dry, then first of all you need to listen to whether the fuel pump is working. Unfortunately, alarm installers can also lock it. If the pump does not work, then you must first measure the voltage at the chip. Most likely, the matter will end with replacing the fuel pump.

    In addition, it is worth clarifying that a working fuel pump may not provide the required pressure to the system; this malfunction can only be determined using a pressure gauge, which is connected to a section of the fuel system. It was already said above that this is not a VAZ, since there is no spool valve to control the presence of fuel in the ramp.

    Checking the starter's serviceability

    To check the condition of the starter, it must be removed from the car and a series of actions must be carried out. Use a screwdriver to manually turn the drive gear. It will turn one way along with the shaft, in the opposite direction - on the shaft. If the gear is working properly, it turns freely, without effort.

    To check the starter, you need to connect the plus of the battery to the top contact bolt of the traction relay with the ignition wires, and the minus to the starter housing. Use a screwdriver to bridge the control terminal of the traction relay with the contact bolt. On a working starter, the electric motor should turn on as a result of such manipulation.

    Hyundai Solaris engines produced before 2022 are similar in design. It may be difficult to start the engine due to failures of three different sensors, as well as problems in the electrical network and a breakdown of the canister purge valve. In the article we will look at how to check these elements, as well as eliminate all possible causes of difficulty starting the machine.

    Why Hyundai Solaris won't start: reasons

    The situation can develop in different ways. Sometimes, after turning the key in the ignition, the engine does not start, but the fuel pump still works and the starter turns. Every time since the third Hyundai, it finally starts and works fine for several days, then the situation repeats itself. Sometimes the car completely stops starting, and the starter shows no signs of life.

    There are several reasons why Hyundai car engines refuse to start. These include deviations in the car’s electrical system, and failures of various sensors; the adsorber purge valve can also fail. If you dig deeper, the cause of the malfunction may be the use of low-quality fuel. It's worth checking the battery and air filter. Diagnosis must be carried out immediately.

    Diagnostics: what to check

    If the crankshaft turns, but the Hyundai engine is inactive and stalls, then look at the following points when diagnosing.

    Spark

    Set the key to the “LOCK” position and remove the plastic cover. We pull out one coil and install an additional candle. Its body must be pressed firmly against the mass. After this, you need to turn on the starter for 3-4 seconds. If the spark plug does not spark, it is most likely a wiring issue. Even if there is a spark, the problem may still be in the wiring - if the insulation is broken.

    Rail pressure

    If the Solaris does not start, you can try turning off the ignition, wait 4 hours, then do the following:

    • Remove the minus terminal.
    • We attach a pressure gauge between the hose and the lamp (do not forget about the tightness of the connections).
    • We connect the negative terminal to the battery. Turn on the ignition. The pressure gauge must produce a pressure of at least 340 kPa.

    If the pressure is lower, the cause is a clogged fuel filter. The pump may be faulty or ice has formed in the fuel line. There are no diagnostic valves on the Solaris engine ramp, which creates additional problems for car enthusiasts.

    Sensors

    We check the DBP and DPKV sensors, as well as the thermometer. If the DPKV sensor is faulty, engine starting is prevented. On DBP and DPKV you can only correct the connection, with a thermometer you can do this: disconnect it, connect another sensor to the plug. After this, if the thermometer is faulty, the engine will start.

    Canister valves

    Disconnect the battery. After removing the supply pipe, disconnect the connector and remove the valve. Then we connect it to the plug again, after which we connect the battery. If the valve clicks when turning the ignition key, it is working.

    How to fix the problem

    A common cause of the problem is the use of low quality fuel. Hyundai owners have probably noticed that candles quickly become covered with soot. Of course, they can be cleaned and replaced. But this is only a temporary solution to the problem, so the fuel will have to be changed.

    The starter turns

    If the starter starts to spin, but the car does not “come to life”, this may happen for the reasons stated above. If there is no spark and it has been determined that this is a consequence of a wiring fault, it must be replaced. It is not necessary to change all the wiring - just the damaged wires are enough.

    If the diagnosis reveals that the pressure in the rail is below normal, you need to check the fuel filter. If it is clogged, it is replaced. The reason may be the pump. If it is faulty, it should also be replaced. In general, all broken sensors must be replaced - the same goes for the thermometer.

    If a malfunction of the adsorber valve is detected, you can try to clean it. Perhaps it became clogged with coal dust that got into it from the adsorber itself.

    The starter doesn't turn over

    Look at the starter itself - the brushes are probably worn out. The starter itself may be faulty - then it will click. Nothing other than a replacement can be recommended here. If there are no clicks, check and (if necessary) replace the starter fuse or solenoid relay.

    Most of the described breakdowns can be fixed on your own. In “neglected” cases, it is impossible to do without a thorough repair, but, fortunately, the Hyundai Solaris cannot be called a complex car in terms of design.

    Replacing coils and wires

    Finally, the last reason for the engine failure to start on a Hyundai Solaris is defects in the wires and malfunction of the coils, which occurs least often. In this case, the check must be performed as follows:

    • Remove the plastic cover;
    • Pull the coil out of the valve where the spark plug is located;
    • Connect it to the spare spark plug;
    • For a few moments, lean both elements against ground and at the same time “click” the starter.

    If a spark does not appear on the spark plug, it means that one of the coils is broken, since in the absence of malfunctions the spark plug begins to burn. You can also evaluate the performance of the coil visually by inspecting it for damage. A faulty part will be indicated by small spots on the body, as well as melting or broken insulation.

    This is the main list of possible reasons why the Hyundai Solaris stops starting. Sometimes a few steps are enough to fix the problem. However, sometimes you need the help of real professionals who are able to perform not only high-quality diagnostics, but also replace parts, if necessary.

    If it turns out that you cannot cope with the problem yourself, it is recommended to give up trying to solve it and call a tow truck, which will deliver the car to the nearest service station.

    The standard method of checking the serviceability of the wiring involves the presence of sparks on the spark plug: you need to remove the plastic cover, remove the coil from the spark plug channel, connect it to a spare spark plug and lean it against ground for a few seconds with the starter turned on.

    If there is no spark or weak sparking, a breakdown of one of the coils can be assumed. Visual diagnostics will show the presence of melts on the coil or small spots on the plastic body. In this case, you can replace the element with broken insulation.

    The reason why the car won't start lies in one simple detail - something is missing. To start an engine normally, three things are required: a spark at the right moment, oxygen and fuel in the right proportions. If at least one condition is violated, “there will be no miracle.” In this article we will look at why the car is difficult to start.

    Fuel

    The fuel is supplied under pressure, which should be from 3 to 4 atmospheres, depending on the make and model of the car. In addition, we are talking about gasoline engines with distributed injection (the injectors are located in the intake manifold). Among other things, the pressure in the fuel line must be maintained for another 5 minutes after the ignition is turned off.

    There are several elements that can cause the Solaris car to start difficult.

    1. Fuel pump. It simply may not provide the required performance. This means that it must be “plugged” with a pressure gauge. Under such conditions, the pressure gauge should show at least 5 atmospheres. A good indicator would be 6 atmospheres. If less, the pump needs to be replaced. You also need to check the check valve on the pump, because it often disappears, the fuel simply drains from the line
    2. Pressure regulator (RDT). It can be installed either on the ramp or in the fuel module if there is no return line. To check, you need a compressor with a pressure gauge. Next we blow into the outlet pipe of the module and look at the pressure gauge. If the RTD is triggered between 3 and 4 atmospheres, then everything is fine.
    3. Also, if the Solaris car becomes difficult to start, it is advisable to replace the fuel filter.

    Ignition

    In fact, checking the ignition system at home is impossible. Yes, you can replace spark plugs, high-voltage wires, module or coils, depending on what it costs. However, this is not a diagnosis, it is a replacement at random.

    You can measure the resistance of the primary winding of the coil (module) and compare it with the documentation for the car.

    Air

    But here everything is not so simple. For example, a car doesn’t start well when it’s cold. To start, a richer mixture is required, however, the slightest air leak will become critical. This could be either a faulty IAC or a simple drying of the gasket between the receiver and the throttle.

    That is why, if the Solaris car has trouble starting, it is necessary, first of all, to check the throttle body for air leaks. This is done using a smoke generator.

    There is also a spraying method. Take any spray that burns, for example, carb cleaner (carburetor cleaner). After this, with the engine running, suspicious areas are sprayed, and the engine’s reaction to these actions is checked. It’s worth noting right away that this method can result in a rather large fire, so you must follow fire safety precautions.

    If after applying the spray to a certain place the engine speed rises, then this is where you need to look for air leaks.

    What is the cause of the malfunction in our car?

    As you already understood, we were faced with the problem of a BMW 325i engine failure to start. Together with you in this article, we carried out diagnostics step by step for the possible cause of the breakdown. As a result, when checking the fuel pump (see above), we did not hear the sound of the fuel pump operating. We also took measurements with a multimeter and found that the resistance of the fuel pump does not correspond to the manufacturer's specifications, which we found on the Internet. Additionally, we found no fuel pressure at the fuel rail under the hood.

    In our car, we determined that there was a spark, that the air filter was at an acceptable level, and that the engine compression ratio was correct. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the cause of the malfunction was the fuel pump. We bought a new fuel pump and installed it in the gas tank. And in the end, our BMW started.

    So if your car refuses to start, remember that it requires four ingredients: spark plugs, air, fuel and compression. By checking each of the components sequentially, you will definitely find the cause of the malfunction.

    Hyundai Solaris does not start, the starter turns

    Sometimes car owners are faced with a situation where the Hyundai Solaris does not start, but the starter turns. The reasons for this behavior of the iron horse may be different.

    Why doesn't Solaris start, the starter turns

    If the starter turns, but the car does not start, there may be problems in both the electrical system and the fuel system.

    First of all, you need to check:

    • Alarm and immobilizer. Often, in the event of a malfunction of the alarm system or its conflict, the immobilizer blocks the operation of the fuel pump.
    • Fuel pump. Both the fuel pump motor and the sensors installed in it may fail.
    • Battery.
    • Sensors (for example, fuel pump), relays and fuses.
    • Electronic control unit.

    What to do if the Hyundai Solaris does not start, the starter turns

    It is necessary to act in a situation where the engine does not start when the starter is running, based on the reasons listed above.

    Listen for the characteristic sound of the fuel pump turning on, check its relays and fuses.

    Check the battery charge if the car is equipped with a manual transmission; as a last resort, you can try to start it the old fashioned way “with a pushrod”.

    Try to check if there is an additional relay, which alarm installers often install to interrupt the fuel pump circuit.

    To look for other reasons related to electrical issues, it is better to contact a service center. A manual car can be towed there. In the case of an automatic transmission, it is better to use the services of a tow truck, although there is an opinion that cars with an automatic transmission can be towed no more than 50 km at a speed of no more than 50 km/h.

    Main directions of repair

    The simplest type of repair is replacing relays and fuses. Ideally, you should have a set of spare fuses in your car. If it is not there, you can use a fuse/relay from other equipment to check, and a new one can be purchased at any nearby auto parts store.

    A discharged battery can be charged or “lighted”, but if its service life has expired, such measures will be effective for a short time, and it is necessary to purchase a new battery.

    You can repair the fuel pump or its components yourself. The fuel module is located in the gas tank and can be reached through a hatch under the rear seat. Disassembling the fuel module is not very difficult: basically, all elements are attached to plastic latches.

    To replace/adjust the ECU and alarm system, it is better to contact an auto electrician, since there can be a great many reasons for the breakdown and nuances in this case. If you take on the job yourself, it is important to understand that the purpose of the repair in this case is to find a break in the electrical circuit.

    In conclusion, we note that all the reasons why the Hyundai Solaris does not start when the starter turns can be divided into two large groups: those that can be eliminated on the spot (for example, a fuse) and those that require major repairs. The second group is not typical for cars of this brand.

    A little about the car

    Among the advantages of this model are simplicity and reliability, which was noted by many Hyundai owners.
    However, despite the positive assessment of the majority of car enthusiasts, the car can completely suddenly let the driver down. The problem will arise if the car stalls while driving, or the car stops starting altogether. Also, many car enthusiasts noted problems with the engine after starting the vehicle. What could be the reasons for possible breakdowns and how can they be dealt with?

    Hyundai Solaris engine does not start

    Owners of Hyundai Solaris have encountered this effect - the engine does not start. We will try to understand the main reasons and their elimination.

    Video material

    The video will tell you in detail why Solaris does not want to start

    We climb into the engine

    First of all, it is recommended to check the cooling system temperature sensor. It is because of incorrect data that the electronic engine control unit can disrupt the fuel supply and create a lean mixture.

    The next place to look for a problem is the injectors. It is defective fuel injection that can lead to the engine being difficult to start not only when the engine is hot, but also when it is cold. To check the elements, you need to dismantle them from the car and then check them on a special stand.

    It is also worth paying attention to the fact that there may be a rupture of the fuel regulator membrane. As a result, gasoline enters the intake manifold, which leads to an enrichment of the combustible mixture. In turn, an over-enriched mixture is difficult to ignite, and in most cases does not burn at all.

    But, for an injection engine, these are not all the reasons. The most common reasons were discussed earlier, and now it is worth considering less common causes. Let's start with the fact that the check valve of the fuel pump may fail, which will pump fuel back and after turning off the engine there will be no gasoline in the system until it is restarted.

    Also, meters and sensors can affect the repeated hot start of the motor. Thus, failure of the following meters may make it difficult to start the engine when hot:

    • Crankshaft position sensor. Incorrect measurement of the crankshaft position will lead to the fact that the data received by the electronic engine control unit is not reliable, and accordingly the normal supply of fuel to the combustion chambers will be disrupted.
    • Mass air flow sensor. If this meter fails, air can enter in large quantities, which leads to an incorrect air-fuel mixture ratio. In turn, this causes poor engine starting.
    • Idle speed sensor. This meter is involved in the start-up and initial operation of the engine, and therefore its failure complicates not only the start-up of the power unit, but also its idling operation.

    High voltage wires. On an injection engine, it is quite difficult to identify a malfunction in high-voltage wires, since they are indirectly related to many malfunctions. But checking the elements is quite simple. To carry out diagnostic operations, it is necessary to dismantle the elements from the vehicle and ring each element with a tester. The resistance should be about 5 ohms.

    Another significant reason for the poor start of a fuel-injected car is the failure of the software of the electronic engine control unit. To determine the malfunction, you will have to connect directly to the on-board computer and conduct a full diagnostic. If any faults are found, they should be corrected.

    Many motorists try to fix the problem themselves. This is not recommended, as it can only cause harm. As practice shows, it is worth contacting professionals who will quickly classify the fault and fix it.

    Diesel

    For a Hyundai Solaris diesel engine, the primary cause is the high pressure fuel pump. Often the cause of the malfunction is quite simple - failure of the oil seals and bushings. In this case, routine maintenance of the unit will help. On the other hand, the reason may be hidden in the breakdown of the plunger pair, which actually leads to a major overhaul of the element.

    Electrics

    Another element that will affect engine starting is the control injector temperature sensor. Failure of this electronic element will cause a changed injection angle. To fix the breakdown, it is worth replacing the sensor.

    As for Solaris gasoline engines, so for a diesel power unit, a malfunction of the engine control unit disrupts the operation of all systems. To fix the problem, you will have to connect to the motor and carry out repair and diagnostic operations.

    The reason for low compression in the engine

    Low compression is usually the result of some kind of mechanical failure. For example, this may be a failure of the timing belt, which is either torn or the belt has slipped by one “tooth”. Also, a low compression ratio may be due to wear on the engine piston system.

    As a rule, over time during vehicle operation, the piston rings or cylinder block walls wear out in the engine, which leads to a decrease in compression in the combustion chamber. If, when you try to start the engine, there is fuel in the exhaust pipe, then the likely cause of failure of the power unit is damage to the piston system (crack, etc.).

    In order to check the piston rings, you can do a compression test along with the engine oil . To do this, before installing the compression gauge on the spark plug hole, add a little engine oil to the cylinder. After this, installing a compression gauge, measure the compression ratio in the cylinder. If it turns out that the compression ratio with the addition of engine oil to the cylinder has become greater than when measured “dry”, then most likely a large gap has appeared between the piston rings and the engine cylinder wall due to wear, which leads to a decrease in compression. The fact is that when you add oil, you close this gap with an oil layer for a short time, which ultimately leads to increased compression in the cylinder.

    DIY mechanism repair

    To restore the functionality of the starter unit in a Hyundai Getz, Solaris or any other model, the mechanism must either be repaired or replaced.

    We invite you to familiarize yourself with the device repair process; the procedure is described using the example of a Hyundai Solaris car:

    1. First, disconnect the battery, since any work on dismantling electrical devices must be carried out with the on-board power supply disconnected. When the battery is disconnected, it is necessary to disconnect block 1 of the wires from the insufficient engine fluid pressure controller and remove block 2 from the corresponding hole in the bracket. Having done this, the wires must be taken to the side.
    2. Press the block fastening and disconnect it from the control contact of the traction relay. Remove the rubberized protective cap from the contact screw of this relay. Using a 12mm wrench, you need to unscrew the nut and remove the wire tip from the contact screw.
    3. Next, using a 14mm wrench, you need to unscrew the screws that secure the starter assembly. Dismantle the device and inspect its drive, but to do this, use a screwdriver to turn its gear. Ideally, the gear should rotate in one direction with the armature shaft, and in the other direction on its shaft. If yours is different, then the drive should be replaced with a functional one.
    4. Using a screwdriver, you will need to move the drive gear on the shaft. This element must move along the shaft without any obstacles, this is mandatory. If you notice that it is sticking, then the drive, again, must be replaced.
    5. Next, the starter mechanism is diagnosed; to do this, it must be connected to the wires for lighting the battery. The plus of the battery is connected to the right contact screw of the traction relay, and the minus is connected to ground, that is, the body of the device.
    6. Using a screwdriver, it is necessary to bridge the contact screw on the right, as well as the control contact of the traction relay. Please note that at this stage you need to be as careful as possible, since sparking may occur during a short circuit. Do not try to accidentally short the screwdriver to ground, this will lead to complete failure of the mechanism. If the unit is operating in normal mode, then at the moment of closure the drive gear should come out and the electric motor of the device should turn on. If this does not happen, then you need to diagnose the electric motor, as well as the traction relay.
    7. To check the electric motor, you need to close the positive contact on the battery with wires, as well as the relay contact screw on the left. As for the negative terminal, it is connected to the body of the unit. As a result of the shorting, the electric motor shaft should rotate; if this is not the case, then most likely the motor itself is faulty and should be replaced.
    8. To independently diagnose the traction relay, you need to connect the “+” terminal on the battery with the control contact of the traction relay using wires. In this case, the negative terminal must be connected to the housing. If the relay is in working condition, then at this moment the drive gear should move out. Otherwise, the relay will have to be changed.
    9. So, failed elements need to be replaced. The mechanism is assembled in the reverse order.

    Poor engine starting or starting the second time

    Greetings, Friends and guests of the site. In this article we will reveal the reasons for poor engine starting when cold or hot. And also if the engine starts only the second time.

    This topic has come up constantly over the years. And the peak of activity occurs in the autumn.

    At this time of year, the nights become cold and car owners begin to experience problems starting the engine in the morning.

    There are several reasons for this phenomenon, and for myself personally, I divide them into three categories:

    • Electrical
    • Fuel
    • Technical

    Let's look at them in order and at the end I will give statistics on which of them occur most often.

    So, let's go.

    Reason #1. Fuel pump

    Or rather, not only the fuel pump, but also the check valve in the fuel module. The fact is that for safety reasons, the ECU turns off the fuel pump after a couple of seconds if the engine does not rotate. This prevents fuel from leaking during an accident.

    Therefore, if the check valve does not work correctly or the pump itself has reduced performance, then it does not have enough time to pump up the necessary pressure to start the engine. And you have to turn on the ignition several times and give the pump more time. Usually the second time the engine starts. Moreover, the colder it is, the more clearly this problem manifests itself, since in warm weather less fuel is required to start and the fuel itself evaporates more easily from the valves, thereby making it easier to start the engine.
