What kind of oil to fill in UAZ Patriot axles Factory recommendations

Cars from the Ulyanovsk plant are equipped with a drive on both axles, which increases the load on the transmission units. To reduce noise during operation and to reduce wear, liquid transmission lubricant is filled into the gear housings. The reliability and safety of vehicle operation depends on the regularity of checking the level and changing the oil in UAZ Patriot axles.

Purpose of the lubricant

To store a supply of liquid lubricant in UAZ Patriot transmission units, axle or gearbox housings are used. The design of the units does not include mechanically driven pumps; the lubricant is supplied by splashing. The oil reduces abrasive wear in the contact area of gear teeth, while simultaneously reducing the temperature of the parts. The resulting metal particles are removed by the lubricant flow into the crankcase, in which the magnetic plug is located. Wear particles are removed manually when adding fresh lubricant.

The oil reduces friction in the bearing supports of the main pair and differential gears. A constant supply of lubricant extends the life of parts, while simultaneously removing wear products from them and reducing the heating level. The crankcases of the units have ventilation ducts, which leads to water vapor entering the cavities. The presence of a layer of lubricant on the surfaces of steel parts prevents corrosion.

Which oil to choose

To fill axle housings, it is necessary to use a substance with a viscosity of SAE 75W-90, which corresponds to API GL-5. The plant does not provide for the use of summer and winter oil; the refilled semi-synthetic type fluid protects surfaces from wear at temperatures from -25°C.

If you plan to operate the car at low air temperatures, it is recommended to fill the axles with synthetic oil that is resistant to thickening in the cold. It creates additional resistance to movement in the axle housings, although it negatively affects fuel consumption.

Recommended grades of oil for UAZ Patriot axles:

  1. Fully synthetic lubricant Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75W-90, providing reduced fuel consumption. The manufacturer promises protection of surfaces from wear from the start of movement. Pour point - from -54°C. Due to the introduction of an additive package, increased heat resistance is ensured, the liquid is resistant to oxidation, which allows reducing the frequency of maintenance.
  2. Synthetic lubricant GT Hypoid Synt 75W-90 GL-5, which provides noise reduction during operation of loaded gear reducers. Additional additives provide protection of elements from corrosion. The pour point is -45°C.
  3. Semi-synthetic oil UAZ SAE 75W-90 API GL-5, produced by Lukoil at the request of the plant. The fluid contains special additives that reduce corrosion of copper parts and allow the substance to be used in synchronized gearbox housings. It is possible to use Lukoil TM-5 lubricant, which is no different from UAZ brand fluid.
  4. Shell Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic fluid, designed for drive axles with hypoid main pair engagement. Pour point - from -45°C. The substance can be used in the gearbox housing; additives are added to the fluid to reduce corrosion of steel and copper parts.

In general, the control systems of the UAZ 469 are reliable and durable.

The gearbox on every car is an important component of any vehicle, so its serviceability is an important factor. The SUV also has a gearbox, thanks to which it is possible to move at different speeds. In addition to the main parts, the gearbox is filled with oil, which requires periodic replacement. In this material we will pay attention to the process of changing the oil in the gearbox on a UAZ Patriot. How the oil is changed, when it is needed and what determines this period.

How much oil is in the UAZ Patriot transfer case?

UAZ Patriot cars assembled before 2013 were equipped with a mechanical two-stage transfer gearbox, which had a lubrication system separate from the gearbox. The capacity of the crankcase is 700 ml; fluid of standard SAE 75W-90 API GL-3 must be poured into the gearbox (supplied in original packages with UAZ factory markings). The design of the unit provides a drain hole and an additional channel for filling and checking the oil level. The holes are closed with screw plugs.

The transition to the Chinese-made UAZ Patriot “Damos F041EM” (Dymos) chain transfer case led to a change in the gearbox configuration and modifications to the vehicle’s transmission. The volume of liquid of standard 75W-85 API GL-4 poured into the crankcase of the unit is 1.8 liters. According to the factory's recommendation, it is better to use the original GT Transmission FF 75W-85 GL-4 oil (made in South Korea). It is allowed to use ZIC GF Top 75W-85 GL-4 or G-FF 75W-85 GL-4 lubricant.

Replacement frequency and amount of transmission fluid to be filled

According to the recommendation of the plant, new oil is poured into the UAZ Patriot axles every 40 thousand mileage. The first replacement is carried out after passing 15-20 thousand kilometers. This is due to the fact that the rotating parts have not yet been ground in, so a large amount of chips gets into the lubricant, deteriorating its quality.

When pouring oil into the axles of a UAZ Patriot, you need to know their capacity. The fluid level should reach the bottom edge of the filler neck.

In the instruction manual, the manufacturer indicates that the front axle holds 1400 ml, and the rear axle – 1300 ml. At the same time, some owners of UAZ Patriot cars note that more oil is actually required.

Safety precautions when carrying out work independently

To protect your eyes and hands from drained oil, use special goggles and thread gloves. If the replacement is carried out after a long trip, the fluid temperature reaches +60…+70°C. Heated lubricant has a negative effect on the skin. If the substance gets on your hands, wash off the liquid with running water and soap. When unscrewing, the drain plug must be supported by hand, preventing the part from falling into the container for collecting used lubricant.

When performing work, the vehicle is held in place by the parking brake. It is recommended to install wheel chocks under the front or rear wheels. The collected oil must be disposed of; pouring the liquid onto the ground or pouring it into the sewer system is strictly prohibited. Used oil can be used as fuel for heating systems.

Do it yourself: Changing the oil in axles.

Changed the oil in the axles. I don’t think it’s superfluous to take this event after the run-in. The oil that came out was quite dark; there was a slight metallic coating on the magnets of the drain plugs. Filled to the edge of the hole plus 250 ml in each bridge. After the replacement, the car ran smoother and the rolling speed increased. The replacement time took 30 minutes. In terms of money, about 4000 for oil.

Procedure for changing the oil in UAZ Patriot

Before changing the lubricant, you must prepare:

  • container for collecting old grease;
  • fresh oil in the required volume;
  • clean transmission syringe;
  • hex key size 12 mm;
  • clean cloth or rags;
  • hand and eye protection;
  • a wire brush to remove a layer of dirt from the surface of the bridges.

In the front axle

There are 2 threaded plugs on the front axle housing, designed to drain old lubricant and refill with a fresh portion of the substance. The upper hole is designed to check the liquid level, which should reach the lower edge of the channel. Both plugs are equipped with an internal hexagonal key hole measuring 12 mm.

The sequence of actions when changing the oil in the front axle crankcase on a UAZ Patriot 2022 assembly:

  1. If the lubricant is being changed for the first time, it is necessary to remove the plastic seal from the drain plug. Before this, it is recommended to warm up the lubricant by driving the car for 15-20 km. Draining is carried out no later than 15 minutes after the end of the trip.
  2. Place the vehicle on a flat surface above the inspection hole or raise it on a lift. Tilt of the vehicle is not allowed, as it prevents the complete drainage of used oil from the gearboxes.
  3. Place a stable, wide-necked container with a capacity of at least 2 liters under the crankcase.
  4. Wipe the surface of the bridge and plugs from dirt with a dry cloth. Unscrew the filler channel plug, which speeds up the procedure for removing waste fluid from the bridge cavity.
  5. Unscrew the drain plug, which needs to be cleaned of metal wear debris with a cloth.
  6. After the lubricant drops stop flowing out of the bridge, the plug should be returned to its place. The conical shape of the plug ensures sealing of the joint, but the plant recommends applying an additional layer of sealant that is resistant to petroleum products to the surface.
  7. Fill the gearbox cavity with fresh lubricant using a transmission syringe with a curved spout; the liquid should be filled until a leak appears from the filling channel.
  8. Wipe the surface of the bridge from grease, and then tighten the plug with a wrench.

According to the operating instructions, the crankcase volume is 1.4 liters. If the car is operated in difficult road conditions, it is recommended to fill the axle with another 200 ml of lubricant using the ventilation hole.

The breather is equipped with a screw plug with a labyrinth ventilation channel, which must be unscrewed before refilling. The disadvantage of this method is that it is impossible to check the level in the normal way, since the liquid will flow through the control hole after removing the plug.

Engine

Check the oil level regularly and top it up to ensure proper operation, especially before long trips.

Check the level when the car is on a flat horizontal platform. After stopping the engine, the oil level should be checked no earlier than 15 minutes later.

The amount of oil required to top up from the “MIN” mark to the “MAX” mark is approximately 1 liter.

Attention!

Filling engine oil at a level above the “MAX” mark will lead to disruption of normal engine operation: increased oil waste, increased toxicity, contamination and failure of spark plugs.

Changing the oil must be done together with replacing the oil filter. Drain the oil with the engine warm.

To change the oil, place the car on a level surface or overpass, open the engine cover and unscrew the engine oil sump drain plug with a 24 mm wrench. The oil drains for at least 10 minutes.

Be careful when draining the oil - the oil may be very hot.

Before tightening the drain plug, check the condition of the sealing gasket. Replace the damaged gasket.

At the same time as changing the oil, the oil filter must be replaced. Use a special wrench to loosen the oil filter. If there is no such key, pierce the filter housing with a screwdriver and, using it as a lever, unscrew the filter, punching the filter as close to the bottom as possible so as not to damage the fitting. You can also use a double-folded strip of coarse sandpaper, wrap it around the filter and push it out of place with your hands. Before installing the filter, lubricate the rubber filter gasket with engine oil. Screw the filter onto the fitting until the rubber gasket of the filter touches the surface of the cylinder block and then tighten it by hand ¾ of a turn.

Fill with fresh oil to the top mark on the dipstick and start the engine. After turning off the emergency pressure lamp, stop the engine and make sure there is no oil leakage from under the filter gasket. Allow the oil to drain into the crankcase for 10 minutes and check the oil level again, adding if necessary.

When replacing one brand of oil with another, it is necessary to flush the engine lubrication system. To do this you need:

  • Drain the used oil from the crankcase of a warm engine;
  • pour special flushing or replacement oil 2-4 mm above the upper “MAX” mark of the indicator;
  • start the engine and let it run at minimum crankshaft speed for at least 10 minutes;
  • drain the special flushing or replacement oil;
  • replace the oil filter;
  • add fresh oil;
  • start the engine. After turning off the emergency oil pressure lamp
  • stop the engine and check the oil level after 15 minutes. If necessary, add oil.

Ulyanovsk residents recommend filling their engines with synthetic oil with a viscosity index depending on the operating temperature. The manufacturer recommends original oils of its own production:

UAZ Motor Oil Premium 5W-40 for the central region;

Judging by the tests carried out by the oil club and other resources, this oil is almost identical to the familiar Lukoil Lux 5w40 SN/CF

A liter of original UAZ oil costs 250 rubles, and Lukoil is around 400 rubles.

Do not mix oils of different brands and with different viscosities!
