The first VAZ 2131 Niva car rolled off AvtoVAZ production lines in 1993. In 2006, the car received a new name - Lada 4x4 - which was used not only for export models, but also for the domestic market. What distinguishes the Niva from the base model of the VAZ 2131 is an extended wheelbase, a five-door body and a more spacious luggage compartment.

History of creation

The first production model of the Niva car, the dimensions of which belong to the category of SUVs, was released in 1977 under the symbol VAZ-2121. The car is made in a station wagon body and has three doors. The main difference from its counterparts is the presence of all-wheel drive. Some details are borrowed from the “six”. Considering the modest technical parameters, it is worth noting the high cross-country ability of this vehicle. The modification became so popular among the people that all subsequent variations were produced without significant changes in the body.

Conveyor production of the VAZ-2121 continued until 1994. Designers constantly improved the engine, transmission and other main components. This model was replaced by an updated version of the SUV under the brands 2123 and 2124. Since 2006, all modifications have been produced under the universal index “4 x 4”.

But the car shows good results off-road. Even on road tires, which the car is equipped with from the factory, the SUV can get out of any “trap”, be it sand or wet primer. The Niva also performs well in the snow. And you can expand the cross-country ability only by installing more “evil” mud tires. The stores have a wide range of tires for Niva.   • Reinforced bumper with towbar. Nowadays, the Chevrolet Niva towbar with bumper protection is very popular. But no one is stopping you from installing it on the classic Niva. This is a ready-made bumper with a trailer hitch mounted into it. Products from Bosal (Bosal) or RIF will cost about 30 thousand rubles. This cost is justified because you get a bumper with a powerful gate and reinforcement, providing a high degree of rigidity and resistance to loads. Allows you to carry heavier loads.   • Square towbar. Another option for the rear bumper. It costs about 2 times less than the previous trailer hitch. But you will need to buy a ball joint separately. It is in great demand due to price, ease of use and load-bearing capacity. And it looks quite original compared to standard towbars. Just look at the numbers indicated on the trailer hitch. They indicate permissible traction loads and additionally help to make sure that what you are looking at is not a fake.

In general, the topic of the power bumper for the Niva deserves special attention.

Each towbar comes with a connection and installation diagram; the kit includes a towbar socket and instructions on how to connect the socket and all electrical components.

Some people prefer to assemble the towbar with their own hands, relying on drawings, photos and video instructions. Personally, my opinion is that this is not the best option. To assemble a full-fledged high-quality tow bar, you need to take into account all dimensions, select high-quality materials, use the appropriate wires for electrical equipment, and so on.

And how much does it cost to assemble a homemade trailer hitch? If it’s high quality and reliable, then it’s about the same as a standard factory towbar. This is an imaginary saving of money. The price will be the same, but the quality of construction will not. Plus, it is more difficult to register a homemade towbar; problems may arise during registration.

I advise you to first familiarize yourself with whether it is possible to install a trailer hitch and what the traffic regulations now say about this.

5-door Niva: technical specifications

Under the hood of the car is a 1.7-liter engine. Initially it was carburetor. The maximum engine power is 82 horsepower. The same engine was also installed on the Soviet short-wheelbase Niva. As the owners' reviews note, the 5-door Niva with this engine did not have the best dynamics characteristics. Acceleration to hundreds took more than 20 seconds. Fuel consumption is about 14 liters per 100 kilometers. The engine life is from 100 to 200 thousand kilometers.

In the 2000s, the car began to be equipped with an injection power unit. Essentially, this is the same engine, but with distributed injection. The maximum power of the unit is 83 horsepower. One of the positive changes is more economical fuel consumption. The car began to consume 1-2 liters of gasoline less. In terms of dynamics, the car has improved slightly, but the owners do not feel any noticeable changes. It took about 19 seconds to accelerate this car to hundreds. And the maximum speed is 137 kilometers per hour. However, the cruising speed is 80 kilometers per hour. As owner reviews note, driving a Niva at higher speeds is not very comfortable.

As for the transmission, there was only one. This is a five-speed manual. Additionally, the car was equipped with a transfer case with a reduction gear. Among the shortcomings, reviews note the big noise of the box. However, this problem occurs in almost all VAZ cars.

Some people install gas equipment on their car in order to save money on fuel. As reviews note, the car feels great on gas. Since the engine is an old design, a second-generation LPG is sufficient. Gas consumption is approximately the same (may increase by one and a half liters), and the engine output is the same.

Basic car configurations

The factory supplies 3 main modifications of the car. They have indexes 1.7, 1.7i and 1.8. All models have the same appearance, are equipped with a five-speed gearbox, and by the designations you can understand what type of engine is installed on the car.

Niva 2131 1.7 is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.69 liters, which develops a maximum power of 79 horsepower. The engine is carburetor, with cylinders with a diameter of 83 millimeters, which provide a compression ratio of 9.3. For cars, it is recommended to use AI-92 gasoline. This engine allows you to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 25 seconds. The maximum speed is no more than 135 km/h.

The VAZ 2131 1.7i variety is distinguished by the fact that it has an engine with a modified fuel injection system. An injector is installed on it, which ensures uniform enrichment of the fuel mixture and its faster entry into the cylinder. For normal operation, it is recommended to use AI-95 fuel.

Niva 2131 1.8 differs from previous versions in that it is equipped with an engine with a volume increased to 1.77 liters, which allows it to develop the greatest power and speed. The piston stroke increased to 85 millimeters and a large combustion chamber made it possible to reduce the compression ratio to 8.4. The changes made it possible to achieve an increase in power to 82 hp.

At the same time, the maximum torque increased to 139/3200 rpm. But this engine is an aspirated carburetor. The outdated fuel supply system allows the use of AI-92 gasoline. The maximum speed developed by this engine is 137 km/h. The time required to accelerate to hundreds is 22 seconds.

Despite all the differences in the engines, they have the same fuel consumption. In the urban cycle it reaches 12.2 liters per 100 kilometers. This is quite a large figure, so a tank with a volume of 65 liters is installed on the car.

What has changed in the VAZ 21214 engine?

Changes affected the valve mechanism. Now, in order to eliminate the gap, it is necessary to use hydraulic supports for the valve levers, instead of the usual adjusting bolts. Oil is supplied under pressure to each hydraulic mount through a separate pipeline.

Minor changes have also been made to the valve lever. In the new one, the radius support pad, which is in contact with the distribution cam, has decreased by 11 mm. The lever can be distinguished by the second groove on the outside (from the side of the hydraulic support).

The camshaft drive had to be significantly modified. A single-row bushing-roller chain is now used instead of a double-row. This entailed replacing all the drive sprockets on the engine with single-row ones installed on the 2123 engine. There are only 30 teeth on the oil pump sprocket, which makes it possible to increase the performance of the oil pump and, thereby, ensure reliable operation of the hydraulic pushers and hydraulic tensioner.

The engine has an 80A generator installed. Its characteristics coincide with the generator model 2112. But installing a new pulley with an outer diameter of 80 mm on it allowed the generator to be given a new index 21214.

Depending on the model, the engine may have a cast iron or welded (stainless steel) exhaust manifold. The use of a welded structure made it possible to reduce the mass of the collector, which contributed to accelerated heating of the converter.

The Niva car, the interior dimensions of which can accommodate up to five people, is not a high-speed vehicle. Its characteristics are designed to overcome off-road conditions. This ability is provided by increased ground clearance, independent front suspension with wishbones, and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension element is of a dependent type with a longitudinal and transverse linkage device.

With the advent of the VAZ-21213 model, developers began to pay more attention to car safety requirements. The design of the car is completely identical to the three-door Niva. So, in front there are simple halogen headlights, on top - turn signals and side lights. What do owner reviews say about the VAZ-21310? The car body is not resistant to corrosion. Although the Niva does not rust as quickly as the UAZ, the metal still needs to be treated regularly. Thresholds are most susceptible to corrosion, and arches are less susceptible. The quality of the paintwork is also poor - reviews say.

Body strength

The championship is shared between VAZ 2121 and Chevrolet. The base of the classic Niva is shorter, which increases strength. But the Chevrolet side members are stronger. The strength of the VAZ 2131 body is lower than that of its “brothers”. At one time there was an opinion that when driving over deep uneven surfaces, such a body may not withstand and even collapse. Today, this myth has been dispelled by operating practice, but you do not need to have special knowledge to understand that body elements with a long wheelbase are subject to a large load. And if it does not exceed the strength limit, then there is still little pleasure in it.

Classes of towbars for the field, what are the differences?

Taking into account the weight of the car and, accordingly, the trailer, the VAZ 2121 towbar belongs to the light class, intended for trailers up to 1.5 tons with a tow ball of up to 75 kg. And there are several designs that differ, including in price. The most inexpensive and simplest is a non-removable tow bar. It is rightfully considered the most reliable.

The frame - that part of the towbar that is bolted to the car - is tightly welded to the ball joint, which serves to directly attach the trailer. This tow bar cannot be lost or forgotten anywhere. He is always with your car. The presence of such a tow bar gives the body additional rigidity and protects the rear bumper from rogues who want to get as close as possible. But there is also a downside.

Salon

As you know, the Niva was developed on the basis of the VAZ Classic. Therefore, it is not surprising that the interior here is from a Zhiguli.

The interior features a recognizable four-spoke steering wheel and a flat dash with a compact glove compartment on the passenger side. The seats in the car are soft, but even too soft. All adjustments are only mechanical. There is no air conditioning, heated mirrors and seats. In terms of equipment, the VAZ-21310 is a Spartan car. There's not even music here. Therefore, owners have to modify the interior themselves. Among other shortcomings, owners note poor sound insulation. Inside you can hear the sound of the engine and gearbox running. And on bumps you can hear how the suspension works. In winter, when the stove is turned on, a loud noise is created. This is the result of the operation of the stove motor. Moreover, it is so noisy already from the factory. If you replace the motor with a new one, you cannot get rid of the noise.

But it must be said that the five-door Niva has a spacious interior. For the most part this applies to the back row. Yes, this is, of course, not a limousine, but a tall passenger will be able to ride without discomfort. The back row has the same soft seats, no adjustments. There are no seat belts here either (the car began to be equipped with them only quite recently).

Patency

In terms of cross-country ability, I would like to give first place to the winner of multiple international competitions, tours and off-road races, Niva 2121. It showed excellent results on rocky terrain, bumpy roads, and viscous soil. The car remains passable even when hanging diagonally. The short wheelbase helps to overcome obstacles of varying complexity.

However, this issue also has its “BUT”. On a flat surface in viscous soil or on snowy roads, the Niva 2131 shows the best results due to its inertia. The weight of the car helps to overcome obstacles (sand, snow, sticky soil) that arise on horizontal surfaces. On bumps, ruts, potholes and other irregularities, the VAZ 2121 undeniably becomes a leader in cross-country ability.

Despite the fact that in technical terms the Chevrolet Niva is fundamentally no different from its predecessor, in practice it does not show the same results in cross-country ability. The reason for this is the longer wheelbase, lower bumpers, and the presence of hinged plastic and moldings. Again, one should take into account the low “psychological passability” that was mentioned above.

TSU selection

Is there an option for installing towbars on Nivas if the car originally came from the factory without one? Yes. These domestic crossovers have special holes, so the trailer hitch is mounted in standard places. But you will also need to drill a few additional holes. Now look specifically at your car.

Niva car owners are offered the installation of several trailer hitch options:

  • non-removable or non-removable, in which the hook or coupling ball is welded to the base;
  • conditionally removable, fastened with several bolts;
  • quick-release, having a slightly protruding coupling for fixation, which allows you to store the hook with the ball separately;
  • quick-release with a vertical type of fastening, where the hook is pulled down and the fasteners are not visible;
  • automatic with a hook that is deflected down, but the structure remains non-removable.

I will say right away that a removable ball is more preferable for me, since this design allows you to use the trailer hitch only when necessary. Moreover, it is better to take quick-release devices, because unscrewing several bolts will take quite a lot of time.

For VAZ Niva 4×4, they usually prefer to choose the simplest towbar options. They are inexpensive and can be purchased for several thousand rubles. Although this has its drawbacks.

"Lada Urban"

This modification is worth talking about separately. It was released in 2015. However, there is no need to talk about a full replacement of the model. This is most likely a restyling of the old Niva.

Externally, the car began to look nicer thanks to a larger plastic bumper and a modern radiator grille. The shape of the mirrors has changed. As standard, the car began to be equipped with alloy wheels. There are not many changes in the interior. The instrument panel now stands at “ten”, the door cards have changed. It must be said that the new five-door Niva received a good set of options. These include electric windows, heated seats and mirrors. And in more expensive versions there is air conditioning. But there is still no music, which is frustrating. In technical terms, changes are minimal. It still has the same fuel-injected 1.7-liter engine. The dynamic and performance characteristics are the same as those of the previous Niva.

Dimensions, weight, load capacity

The vehicle has characteristics such as length, width, height. These indicators help the driver assess how much space the car occupies on the road. Length is the distance between the maximum protruding parts in front and behind. The width is determined by the boundaries of the side mirrors. Height is measured from the surface on which the vehicle is located to the highest point on the roof of the vehicle.

All this data is not difficult to find in the vehicle operating manual. Dimensions Niva 2131:

Payload capacity is the difference between the permissible maximum weight and the curb weight. For Lada Niva 2131, the first indicator is 1870 kg, therefore, the carrying capacity of this vehicle is 500 kg. Permitted maximum weight (PMM) is calculated as the sum of the curb weight of the car and the maximum total weight of luggage and passengers (in the amount provided for by the design).

To disable the DRL on LADA cars (Granta, Kalina and Priora), in which the light is controlled using the MUS (lighting control module), you should set the block knob to the middle position between the “circle” and “dimensions”.

To turn off the DRL on LADA cars (XRAY, Vesta and Largus), in which the light is controlled using the left steering column switch, you should similarly set the position of the regulator to an intermediate position (photo No. 3).

It was not so easy to adapt the off-road Lada Urban, and even with 5 doors, to an urban environment: the dimensions, in comparison with the “three-door”, have changed. The length has increased to 4140 millimeters, the height is 1640 millimeters, and the width is 1690 mm. The gap between the axles is now 2700 mm. Under the hood of the engine compartment there is a standard 1.7 liter engine with an 8-valve gas distribution system. The SUV's suspension remains standard (a spring system on wishbones in the front part of the body, and hydraulic shock absorbers in the rear). The control has been upgraded with a hydraulic booster.

Despite the fact that this is a full-fledged SUV, it is still not recommended to conquer endless forest expanses without proper preparation in an extended 5-door Niva Urban. The story where a five-door car literally “sits” on a bump approximately in the middle of the body is still relevant today.
