The starter continues to spin after the engine starts: reasons

After starting the car engine and returning the ignition key to its original position, the electric current stops flowing to the starter traction relay. Its armature is demagnetized and pulled into the relay, moving the starter drive behind it. The drive gear is disengaged from the flywheel ring gear. The contacts inside the traction relay open, the starter is completely de-energized and stops.

This starter shutdown scenario can be disrupted by a number of factors. In this case, the starter does not turn off immediately after starting the engine. Its armature continues to rotate, eventually causing destruction and failure.

The starter does not turn off after starting the engine, reasons

Using the example of starters for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, 2105, 2107 cars.

— The contact part of the ignition switch is faulty

Contacts “50” and “30” remain closed, electric current continues to flow to the starter traction relay. The starter does not turn off and continues to work after the car engine is started. Perhaps the contacts are “sintered” or the contact part of the lock begins to collapse.

— Starter misalignment

The starter is not securely secured in the mounting hole. When misaligned, the drive gear does not disengage from the flywheel ring and continues to rotate with it.

— The starter drive clutch is faulty

The rollers inside it get wedged. In this case, the drive gear does not disengage with the flywheel ring gear and continues to rotate, transmitting torque to the starter armature.

— Faulty starter traction (retractor) relay

The contact plate does not open with the relay contact bolts (it is stuck). If the relay is detachable, you can fix the breakdown yourself; if not, then only replacing it will help.

— The drive coupling jams on the splines of the starter armature (shaft)

When moving backwards, it locks on the splines. The gear remains in mesh with the engine flywheel. Most likely, the splines are very dirty or rusty.

— Worn starter bushings

The bronze bushings (bearings) of the starter are worn out. In this case, the starter armature warps and the drive gear does not disengage from the flywheel ring. The downside of this malfunction will be difficulty starting the engine with the starter. The starter shaft does not want to rotate (it rotates, sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly) - the starter “shoes”.

Notes and additions

— A starter that does not turn off after starting the engine produces increased noise from the engine compartment. It is necessary to immediately stop the engine and identify the cause of the malfunction.

— You can block the starter while the engine is running by adding an additional relay to its switching circuit. See “Starter Interlock While Engine is Running.”

A car starter is an attachment to a vehicle that is necessary to rotate the engine crankshaft to start it. The starter itself (part of the electric engine starting system) is actually a DC electric motor, powered by the battery.

the starter does not turn off

After starting the engine (VAZ 21074), the starter continued to turn. I turned it off and the starter continues to turn. Turned off the ignition - no change. Only when he removed the terminal from the battery did he calm down. I installed the terminal back - silence. I start the engine and again only removing the battery terminal stops the starter. For some reason, without any doubt, I decided to replace the contacts in the ignition switch, but this did not solve this problem. Tell me, good people, what needs to be done to eliminate this disgrace.

  • appendix (retractor) on the starter, look

  • did it happen out of the blue? the retractor jams in the closed position.

  • for no apparent reason in the evening I parked the car, everything was fine, and in the morning this is the story ((. I roughly guessed that the retractor was sticking, but what should I do? Should I change the retractor assembly or?

appendix (retractor) on the starter, look

I'll take a look today, thanks.

and what to do? Should I change the retractor assembly or?

I would first disassemble the retractor and take a look. There is an electromagnet there, maybe with some lubricant... talk to it. You can also try to tear off the thin wire that goes to the retractor after closing. It is responsible for the electromagnet, and perhaps voltage is constantly supplied to it, although in the moment the ignition key is released, the voltage should be turned off and the contact should open. Only these experiments are extremely harmful for the starter, because with the same speed as that of a running engine, the starter will quickly break.

change or remove the retractor, and as a temporary measure, after the start you can hit it with something heavy, or even with a pry bar
