Owners of cars with carburetor or injection engines know how important it is to regularly monitor the condition of spark plugs and, if necessary, replace them. After all, it is the spark plugs that ensure the correct start of the engine and its stable operation. In previous articles, we looked at how to select spark plugs, and also described in detail the key characteristics of the products. The topic of today's article will be the marking of spark plugs and this information choose spark plugs correctly , according to the specific characteristics of the power unit . Let's look at the products of the most famous manufacturers, which can be used for cars of Russian and foreign brands.
Replacing iridium spark plugs
Replacing spark plugs is simple.
Even a beginner can handle this. First you need to remove the armor wire and unscrew the spark plug. A new one is screwed in and the armor wire is put on. The replacement has been made. But before you start removing the old spark plug and replacing it with a new one, you need to carefully inspect the spark plug well. Dirt and liquid usually accumulate there. If this dirt gets into the spark plug cylinder, something irreparable can happen. That is why you need to carefully wipe the entire area around and blow out the spark plug well. Now you can start replacing the spark plug.
Experienced bikers believe that when tightening a spark plug, it is better to under-tighten it than vice versa.
How to check spark on a spark plug
The best spark plugs
If you experience unstable engine operation, it begins to “triple”, it is quite possible that the time has come to change the spark plugs, or the PVN, or the ignition module needs to be replaced. So, first, let's check the spark plugs of the VAZ 2114, most often the reason is in them.
- We remove the PVN tips from the spark plugs
- Unscrew all 4 spark plugs (you will need a 21 key)
- We put the tip on the spark plug and lean it against the metal (possibly against the body of the engine block)
We start turning the starter and look at the spark plug, if there is a spark, then the spark plug is working. We do the same actions with other candles.

Which spark plug to buy
Iridium spark plugs
1. Denso PK20PR-P8 is a good replacement for standard spark plugs. You will have to manually set the gap.
2. NGK BKR6EIX – If you are willing to pay for quality, this is a worthy choice. It will not be possible to save on the resource, but stable operation of the motor is guaranteed until the resource is exhausted.
3. Bosch WR7DP - another resource champion. The price is appropriate. Due to its innovative design, it produces a stable spark even when the battery is discharged.
4. Denso K20TXR - a complete analogue of the original spark plug. The coating is nickel, and the quality of work is like that of iridium. Works well only on gasoline.
5. Bosch FR7LDC+ – low cost champion. Just a good candle: don't expect outstanding performance. Unfortunately, popular products are often counterfeited. You should buy only in branded stores.
6. Beru Ultra-X 79 – the best price-quality ratio. Stability of operation does not depend on the quality of gasoline. Works well on liquefied gas.
Non-traditional schemes
Some of the design solutions in spark plugs of an unconventional design can be called conditionally working - by improving one thing, they worsen another. The simplest example is the NGK V-Line series of spark plugs: their central electrode has a groove, so the spark always jumps between the edge of the electrode and the side one. In theory, this improves ignition of the mixture by moving the spark into a better ventilated space and stabilizing the spark point, but the erosion of such a central electrode is accelerated.
Some of the candles on the market cannot be classified as anything other than “Herbalife” from the car market: all sorts of “pre-chamber”, “torch” and so on candles, at best, work no better than standard ones, at worst, they quickly deteriorate. For example, in the notorious “Bugaets” candles, the soldered skirt not only worsened the ventilation of the spark gap, but also burned out, and sometimes went into “free flight” into the combustion chamber. Of the designs that are workable, but useless in the practice of an ordinary motorist, we note only spark plugs that do not have a side electrode at all - they were originally created to work in ultra-high boost engines in order to avoid overheating of the protruding side electrodes; in a normal city cycle on a “civilian” boost level motor, they They clean themselves disgustingly and guarantee rough idling even on ideal quality gasoline.
Which spark plugs for VAZ are better to choose?
How to check spark plugs with a tester
There are a large number of different modifications of the part, which complicates life for motorists. The problem is that each motor is designed for a specific type of spark plug. If you supply the wrong part, a number of negative consequences can arise.
- Misfire of the mixture due to the gap between the electrodes of the element being too wide.
- Interruptions in the operation of the internal combustion engine caused by too low spark power.
- Instant failure of the device due to too much electrode protrusion.
Also, depending on the inconsistencies present, other malfunctions may “pop up” that reduce the comfort of using the car.
What to look for when choosing. AvtoVAZ plant specialists recommend selecting spark plugs according to a number of parameters
Specialists from the AvtoVAZ plant recommend selecting spark plugs according to a number of parameters.
- Heat number. The parameter characterizes the rate of heat removal from the working part of the candle. At the same time, the electrode transfers excess heat to the spark plug skirt in a timely manner, which ensures stable operation of the part. If energy is removed too quickly, scale forms on the working part of the part, which prevents normal spark breakdown. If the withdrawal is too slow, the thin electrode overheats. The process provokes the formation of glow ignition. This prevents the engine from operating normally due to detonation of the mixture or its early ignition. Under normal thermal conditions, a spark adequately breaks through the spark plugs and does not form excessive carbon deposits.
- Spark gap. Some users know that for the engine to operate correctly, the spark gap on the spark plugs must be maintained. The working gap on VAZ spark plugs is strictly set by the manufacturer of the power plant and is necessary due to the fact that the formed electric arc has a certain strength. As the distance increases, the spark loses stability, which can lead to misfires. In the opposite case, easier starting of the engine is ensured, but when the gas is released, the electric arc current may not be enough. This is justified by the fact that each ignition coil has a certain transformation ratio, usually equal to 2000 units. This means that during the start-up of the internal combustion engine, the elements produce up to 14 kW, and during normal operation it is already 24. Consequently, failure to comply with this parameter can lead to serious disruptions in the operation of the motor.
- Departure of the working part of the electrodes. The parameter is critical for adequate operation of the power plant. The spark plugs on the VAZ 8-valve injector, as well as for carburetor models, have electrodes strongly pushed forward. This is due to the fact that the structural parts are located in the corner of the combustion chamber, where there is no adequate ventilation. The overhang of the working part allows for better ignition of the mixture and stabilizes engine operation. If the spark plugs are mounted in a multi-valve engine, where the inserts are located in the center of the valve head, it is recommended to install spark plugs with a deep-set core - this will prevent damage to the electrodes by the piston bottom and an abundance of carbon deposits on the structural elements.
- Number of electrodes. Initially, manufacturers position this parameter as a definite plus. When one electrode “burns out,” the spark plug switches to another, which significantly increases its service life. However, not everything is as simple as it seems at first glance. If the mixture is sprayed unevenly in the cylinder (poor ventilation of the combustion chamber), and at this moment the spark jumps to the shadowed part (the place where the exhaust remains), misfire may occur, which will lead to unstable operation of the power plant. Additionally, this fact increases the wear of the catalyst and engine oil, which is critical for VAZ cars.
- Manufacturer. The manufacturer of the product is also an important parameter. Users recommend buying from trusted brands that have been on the market for a long time. The cost of such candles will be significant, but with proper selection and operation they will work for a long time and without significant complaints.
By adhering to the specified parameters, a car enthusiast can buy a fairly high-quality product, while saving on the frequency of car servicing and repairs.
Types of candles, their structure
Not enough horsepower during acceleration, slow start, fuel consumption is growing at a gigantic rate, is the car shaking? You need to take a closer look at the heating system. These failures can occur for other reasons, but they are the clearest sign that the ignition is not working properly. Depending on the number of cylinders of the car, the number of spark plugs changes. Let's consider the components of the system design and their functionality:
- top terminal: ignition coil connection point;
- main body: high voltage generation and heat insulator;
- thread: screwing a product into the cylinder head;
- electrode: spark source, the most important element, the quality of the system depends on its reliability.
- center contact material;
- spark gap size;
- heat number (the higher it is, the less the product heats up);
- overall and connecting dimensions (length and thread pitch);
- number of side electrodes;
- resource of use;
- self-cleaning ability.
There is a variety that has become very popular - iridium spark plugs. Theoretically, their design has a thinner central wire diameter than others, it conducts current better and generates a more powerful spark, which greatly simplifies engine operation. There are many myths that iridium products significantly increase the performance and power of car engines; in practice, the increase in efficiency is not large. Let's look at the best types of glow systems in a little more detail:
Heaters perform the same function in diesel engines as the ignition system in gasoline engines. They are called "preheat plugs"
They are responsible for facilitating cold starts, which is especially important for diesel engines, which are increasingly found on our roads. The heater is a resistor designed to increase the temperature inside the combustion chamber
Its shape resembles a ballpoint pen, one end of which is heated before starting. It is important to remember that it is advisable to replace all elements at the same time so that the work is rhythmic. Plugs are elements that ignite a mixture of gasoline and air inside the combustion chamber. A spark is generated due to a difference in electrical potential. If the motor is operating normally, this process is repeated an average of 2000 times per minute.
If you replace the ignition system in time, you can avoid premature wear of other parts of the vehicle. If you notice any of the following signs, it's time to consider purchasing new devices:
- loss of power while driving;
- increased fuel consumption, because gasoline combustion occurs incorrectly due to a spark generated at the wrong time;
- difficulty starting, especially in cold weather, knocking when the engine is running;
- dark smoke on the exhaust.
Let's look at the process of attaching a new heating system, provide step-by-step instructions and tips for installing the product yourself at home.
Imported devices
Imported SZ designations are applied by analogy with Russian ones , but using other alphanumeric characters, which can lead car owners into some confusion. Although, in order to simplify the choice, the packaging contains information about which vehicles they can be used on. In addition, the marking of imported devices can be deciphered using special replaceability tables. But let’s look at the samples most in demand among car owners in more detail. Let's take an example of the labeling of devices from leading brands.
Assortment of imported candles
NGK spark plugs
company (Japan) is called the leader in the production of SZ . Its products are recognized as being of the highest quality and reliability. NGK spark plugs are marked as follows:
- domestic devices A 11 are an analogue of products B 4 H;
- And 17 DVRs are replaced by BPR 6 ES.
The marking of NGK products is quite simple to decipher. In particular, B4H:
- the letter symbol B specifies the diameter and pitch of the thread, in this case it is M14x1.25, other possible designations are A/C/D/J;
- digital symbol 4 indicates the heat value - this indicator varies in the range 2-11;
- the letter symbol H indicates the thread size (12.7mm).
Marking of NGK spark plugs The
designation BPR 6 ES indicates that this product is equipped with a standard thread, a projection insulator (P), a resistor (R), a heating coefficient of 6, a thread size of 17.5 mm (E), the symbol S indicates the individual properties of the product.
The presence of a number at the end (usually separated by a hyphen) indicates that the electrodes have a gap of this size.
Spark generators Bosch
Bosch products need no introduction . Let's say the article number WR 7DC has the following meaning:
- symbol W – thread with standard parameters (14);
- symbol R – the presence of a resistor that prevents interference;
- digital symbol 7—heat value;
- letter D—thread size (19mm);
- the letter C is a copper alloy electrode, other possible designations are O (regular alloy), S (silver element), P (platinum).
Products marked WR 7DC are an analogue of domestic spark plugs A 17 DVR, which work with engines of VAZ cars.
Bosch spark plug markings
Czech Brisk devices
Since the 35th year of the last century, the company has been producing SZ, which are in constant demand among our motorists.
The article number on the candles of this manufacturer, for example, DOR 15 YC, has the following decoding :
- the letter D denotes a “standard” size thread (1.25mm), oriented for wrench 14, with a body size of 19mm;
- the letter symbol O indicates a special design of the product, made in accordance with ISO regulations;
- the letter R indicates the presence of a resistor, and the symbol X indicates the ability of the electrode resistance to form carbon deposits;
- the number 15 is a heat indicator that can vary in the range 8-19 (in this case, the index 13 is not indicated by the manufacturer);
- the letter Y indicates a protruding arrester;
- symbol C indicates a head electrode made of copper;
- 1 (mm) - gap at the electrodes.
Brisk candles
Beru devices
The manufacturer Beru (Germany) produces candles and other components of premium quality. Products are marked, for example, as 14 R-7 DU, which stands for:
- 14 – thread size (14×1.25mm);
- R – there is a resistor;
- 7 – heat coefficient (interval 7-13);
- D – thread size (19mm) with gasket-seal under the cone;
- U – head electrode made of copper+nickel alloy.
Using another designation as an example - 14 F-7 DTUO - we will explain that the marking changes slightly: the values of SZ are standard, and the nut is smaller than the installation space (F), can only be used in “low-power” motors with a seal (T), the head element of the product strengthened (O).
Beru candles
Denso devices
This company labels its products as SK 16 PR-A 11, which stands for as follows:
- S – head electrode with a diameter of 0.7 mm made of iridium, the electrode on the side is equipped with a platinum plate;
- K - hexagon diameter;
- 16 - heat coefficient;
- P – head electrode protruding 1.5 mm;
- R – there is a resistor;
- A is a parameter specifically for this modification of the SZ;
- 11 - gap size.
Please note that letter designations on Denso devices may vary depending on the product series.
Denso spark plugs
Champion devices
Products from this brand are labeled similarly to other candles . For example, the designation RN 9 BYC 4 is:
- R - presence of a resistor (if the symbol E is indicated, the product is equipped with a screen, O-wire resistor);
- N – standard thread size (10mm);
- 9 — heat value (interval 1-25);
- BYC – head electrode made of copper with two side elements (products of the “standard” design are marked with the symbol A);
- 4 - gap at the electrodes.

How does a spark plug work?
Consists of the following elements:
- tip (contact pin);
- insulator ribs;
- insulator;
- base;
- seals;
- side electrode;
- central electrode;
- metal body;
- ring sealing.
Tip. Its task is to transmit voltage to the central electrode through a special conductive rod. On a high-quality candle, the tip should not unscrew. If it is removed, this indicates a low-quality product.
The insulator is made from a special ceramic material. The insulator has a wavy appearance; due to the parameters and number of waves, the voltage path can be lengthened.
Metal body. Looking at the body of the spark plug you can tell a lot. For example, whether it is of high quality or not, find out the manufacturer. If you can see rainbow tints on the case, then we can safely say that it is a fake, because the tints mean that the product has not completely undergone heat treatment.
Metal ring. The ring serves to create a tight connection between the spark plug and the cylinder block.
The internal seal is designed to fix the ceramic insulator and improve thermal conductivity.
The insulator cone (the base of the wavy insulator) can be in the shape of a barrel or a cone, it all depends on the purpose of the candle. Inside it there is a central electrode, based on the appearance of which, the operation of a particular cylinder can be characterized.
The technological chamfer makes it easier to fit the spark plug into the cylinder head.
We recommend: ENEOS: high quality oil for modern engines
Side electrode. It has a curved shape at 90º C, and contains platinum plating, which improves its properties and long service life. There may be several side electrodes in the package.
Air gap. The space between the ceramic insulator and the metal body is designed to reduce and self-clean carbon deposits. The gap size is indicated by the last digits in the model name.
Central electrode. It is made of special alloys that are resistant to high temperatures and can have different heights and diameters.
Ceramic body. Its presence allows you to isolate the central electrode from the ground and can withstand a voltage of 50 kV.
There is a thread on the body with which the spark plug is attached to the cylinder head. The body has a turnkey hexagon shape and is coated with a special anti-corrosion substance. The supporting surface can be either conical or flat. The spark plug ring serves as a sealing element for the spark plug hole. High quality ceramics are used for insulation. To avoid loss of electricity, special grooves are provided on its surface, onto which glaze is applied, and the insulator area on the side of the combustion chamber is made in the form of a cone. In the middle of the ceramic part there is a central electrode and a contact rod, and perhaps a resistor is located between them. It is designed to suppress possible radio interference. The side electrode is welded to the metal body. Alloys for electrodes have high heat resistance. In order to maximize service life, spark plugs are introduced that have several side electrodes, which are coated with a ball of platinum or iridium. Their service life is up to 100,000 km.
What can candles say?
The condition of the spark plugs can indicate existing problems with the engine. For example, if the electrode is covered with black carbon deposits, this indicates an enriched fuel-air mixture. As a rule, such engines simultaneously experience increased fuel consumption. But if there is light gray or white carbon deposits on the electrode, then the engine is running on a lean mixture, which can lead to overheating of the combustion chamber.
If there is a small skirt with a reddish tint on the central electrode, this indicates a high content of various additives in the fuel. As a rule, such deposits are also found inside the engine. Accordingly, it will be necessary to clean the engine using ultrasound and special injector cleaners.
If there are oil smudges on the spark plugs, this indicates increased oil consumption and problems with the valve stem seals. Such an engine has a bluish exhaust color and a characteristic smell of exhaust gases.

Spark plug markings
If you have any difficulties finding tables that help determine the heat rating of devices from a particular manufacturer, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the markings of the spark plugs, indicated directly on the products themselves. Domestic devices have corresponding markings, where the numbers indicate the value of the heat value:
Domestic devices have corresponding markings, where the numbers indicate the value of the heat value:
- 11 – 14 (“hot” candles);
- 17 – 19 (“medium” candles);
- indicator from 20 and above – “cold” candles;
- value from 11 to 20 on the device – unified candles.
In the recent past, on the products of some foreign companies, the thermal characteristics of devices were indicated by time - in seconds, after which glow ignition occurred.
These values exceed domestic indicators by approximately 10 times. Currently, foreign companies producing spark plugs use a conventional heat value in their labeling.
Is it possible to use spark plugs with the same characteristics for gas and gasoline?
Having installed gas-cylinder equipment on his own car, the owner will a priori be puzzled by the question of whether spark plugs are suitable for gas and gasoline, that is, whether it is possible to use devices with the same heat rating values. The gas mixture is significantly leaner than traditional fuel.
Accordingly, a higher voltage is required to ignite the fuel-air mixture. If gasoline engines require 14 kW, then a gas engine requires 16 kW.
During periods of ignition and subsequent combustion of the gas mixture, the temperature in the chamber where these processes occur is much higher.
These properties of the gas mixture imply the use of devices with a low heat index, that is, “hot” candles.
Candle parameters
Overall and connecting dimensions are the pitch and diameter of the thread on the contact part, which is screwed into the cylinder, the size of the hexagon and the length of the threaded part.
These dimensions correspond to each individual type of engine, since the seat on the cylinders has its own design size. The drip number is an indicator of the level of thermal property that shows how the plug heats up depending on the various thermal loads of the engine. If it has a small drop number, then it is called hot. Its thermal cone heats up to 900º C. They are used on low-power engines with a low compression ratio. Cold spark plugs are those in which ignition occurs under high thermal loads; accordingly, they are used for highly accelerated engines.
The size of the spark gap. This value is usually indicated in the vehicle operating rules and has limits from 0.5 to 2 mm. The gap can be structurally adjustable.

How to choose the right spark plug
It is important to purchase high-quality spare parts for a car; in order to buy a good product, you need to pay attention to the following selection criteria:
1. It is necessary to order a product compatible with the machine's engine. Most of the best brands clearly indicate the vehicle models their product will be compatible with. Therefore, you need to carefully review the manufacturer's compliance list.
2. Apart from compatibility, you need to choose the design type as there are various options available. The most common:
- Copper-Nickel: The name may confuse you because these products are primarily made of nickel, with only the inner core being made of copper. It conducts current well, which is why most electrodes are made from it. The product is inexpensive, its disadvantage is that it has a short service life, even if used in a high-energy ignition system without a distributor. Many vehicles will benefit from this option; it is suitable for natural gas engines.
- The next type has a platinum center contact. It is expensive due to the rarity of this element, which is harder than nickel, so you can be sure that the product will not corrode. The platinum will prevent the tip gap from widening and wearing out, which directly affects the efficiency of the engine. There are models with one or more electrodes. This helps generate the spark in the best possible way. In terms of service life, it is twice that of standard nickel/copper construction.
- Iridium Product: If you want flawless, smooth motor performance, there is nothing better than an Iridium product. It has a longer service life than traditional models. The thin wire central contacts are designed to conduct current most efficiently. These are expensive products, but the price is offset by incredible performance.
- Silver candles are an option with the best thermal conductivity. The problem with this product is its durability. The precious metal cannot match the durability of platinum or iridium models.
3
It is important to decide: “What kind of ignition is needed, cold or hot?” To give a very simple but precise definition, we can say that candles that glow during operation are hot
And those that do not reach high temperatures are cold.
The metal shell of the structure operates at the same heat as the head. The elements are screwed to each other, forming a chamber in which heat is distributed evenly. Hot models have a long insulator tip with a large surface area, causing all parts to become hot. At the same time, cold ones have a small cap that helps quickly remove excess degrees from the combustion zone.
Russian-made models usually have a numerical heat rating. Their assessment is not always consistent because some brands give higher values while others underestimate.
It becomes extremely difficult for buyers to choose the right product with so many options. It is best to order the design in accordance with the car's engine and year of manufacture.
4. If you do not want to suffer for a long time during replacement, it is better to choose a design that is easy to install. By applying the above selection criteria, a productive model can be easily determined.

Spark plugs А17ДВРМ, BRISK, Bosch
This article is devoted to the choice of candles for a grant, if you adhere only to the official recommendations of the VAZ.
Only spark plugs listed in the Owner's Manual will be considered. After 30 thousand km at TO2 it is necessary to change the spark plugs - this is written in the service book. And immediately the agony of choice arises - which candles to put in a modern style. In the official Granta liftback operating manual (Appendix 3), 3 types of spark plugs are recommended for an 8-valve engine:
(1) А17ДВРМ JSC "Robert Bosch Saratov" (2) LR15YC-1 BRISK (3) WR7DCX Bosch
Let's look at each of these candles.
(1) Spark plugs А17ДВРМ
are manufactured at the Bosch plant in the city of Engels, Saratov region.
Autoreview has an old article from 2002 about this plant. In short, there was an old Soviet factory for the production of industrial ceramics and glow plugs, founded in 1942. After the collapse of the union, the plant (suddenly) fell into decay, for reasons known to all. In 1996 it was purchased by Bosch. In general, Bosch, in addition to Germany and Russia, has three more candle factories - in India, China and Brazil. As stated in the same old article, the products of all factories do not differ in quality and are sold not only to local markets, but also for export. All processes there are automated, and the function of people is reduced to transferring material from one machine to another. It seems that spark plugs from this factory used to be on frets from the assembly line.
(2) Spark plugs LR15YC-1
Czech company BRISK stand in modern harmony. The company is Czech, but the production is Russian - in 2016, a plant was opened in Togliatti, the products from which go to the assembly line. I drove 30 thousand km on these spark plugs without any problems. Here is their status:
(3) Bosch WR7DCX
(0242235530) discontinued back in 2004:
They were replaced by WR7DCX+
. Perhaps they were previously manufactured in Germany, but today in Russia I could only find those manufactured at the same Bosch plant in the city of Engels:
I did not consider these candles for two reasons. Firstly, there is not a word about them in the Guide. Secondly, most likely these are just the same A17DVRM JSC Robert Bosch Saratov
, just in a different package. If you arrive at the MOT without your spark plugs, you may be given these spark plugs by default. Just like with motor oil. If you arrive without yours, they will fill you with Lada Professional 5w-40 or Lada Ultra 5w-40 (which were actually first Lukoil, and now Rosneft).
Positive and negative reviews can be found for each of these candles. I chose the BRISK LR15YC-1 for several reasons. Firstly, in 30 thousand km and 1.5 years I have not had any problems with them. During all this time, the starter only worked longer than usual a couple of times. Secondly, in the Autoreview article there is information that the ECU is optimized for working with spark plugs that come from the assembly line. This article is only available with a paid subscription, so I will quote here:
“The “brain” of the ignition system, the role of which in our case is played by the January-5.1 controller, depending on the speed and load, changes the ignition timing in accordance with the program embedded in it, designed for standard EZ A17 AVRM spark plugs.”
The article is old, and at that time the standard ones were EZ A17 AVRM. Today the standard ones are BRISK LR15YC-1, and the ECU algorithms are probably optimized specifically for these spark plugs.
There is only one thing that confuses me about these candles. On the Internet you can find this photo of the packaging (taken here):
But I was only able to buy it in this package:
NGK Iridium Spark Plugs
Iridium ngk spark plugs are considered the best solution, as they have excellent quality. Iridium is a noble metal and the hardest. This metal melts at a temperature of 2450 degrees. If you compare an iridium spark plug with a regular spark plug, it will last you twice as long.
NGK iridium spark plugs have a platinum plate on the middle electrode. It provides high spark plug power even in difficult conditions. These spark plugs have a thin middle electrode and less voltage is required during ignition.
Innovative technologies have developed such a system that electrical charges occur in the annular gap between the middle electrode and the insulator. Thanks to this, soot particles that collect in this area are removed. The self-cleaning effect of such candles extends their lifespan.
Characteristics
Let's start with the main characteristics. The length of the thread of the AU17DVRM spark plug is 1.9 cm; a 16 mm hexagon is used to unscrew and screw the devices into the engine. One of the main characteristics is the gap, which in this case is 1 mm. If we talk about stability, then these SZ cannot boast of it, especially if we compare this brand with the Bosch and NGK brands. If you believe the manufacturer, then SZ AU17DVRM are produced using modern technologies and innovations, which makes it possible to achieve a high quality product.
The main criteria by which selection is carried out
Products from various brands
Modern motors are manufactured with certain design features that provide them with certain technical characteristics. For normal operation of the power unit, it is necessary to install an SZ, with certain parameters corresponding to the type of car engine
When choosing an analogue of SZ, you should pay attention to their main parameters:
- Screw-in dimensions:
- length of the threaded part;
- thread pitch;
- thread diameter;
- turnkey hexagon dimensions.
We recommend: Technical characteristics of Idemitsu 5W-40 engine oil
Products with overall and connecting dimensions that do not correspond to the engine type cannot be mounted on the power unit. The use of devices with a threaded part that is too long or short, in most cases ends in a major overhaul of the car engine.
- The thermal part of the analogue should be as close as possible to the characteristics of the original. We are talking about the heat number, which reflects the ability of candle products to heat up at different thermal loads of the engine. Please note, when selecting SZ for compatibility, that domestic products are marked indicating the heat number, while foreign ones are divided into cold (having a large heat number) and hot (having a small heat number).
- The distance between the spark plug contacts must correspond to the size specified in the machine manual. An increased spark plug gap will lead to a decrease in spark power, and a reduced gap will lead to breakdowns in the ignition system.
- Number of spark plug electrodes. Many motorists are of the opinion: the more spark plug contacts, the stronger the sparking. This is an erroneous statement; the spark occurs between two contacts. In multi-contact devices, the operating principle is as follows: if one electrode burns, sparking will occur on the second. Such modernization of the SZ design makes it possible to increase their operational period, but does not affect the spark power.
- The material from which the spark plug contacts are made. It is possible to buy iridium, platinum or classic candles. The operational period of the product, the rate of formation and the power of the spark depend on the material of their contacts.
We recommend watching a video about how the SZ marking is deciphered:
Domestic devices
Russian spark generators for all types of transport comply with the international regulations ISO-MS-1919 , which allows their replacement with imported analogues in terms of key characteristics. In addition, labeling of products manufactured by Russian enterprises is provided for by regulation OST-37.003.081 . The markings of domestic devices should be deciphered using alphanumeric characters.
We read the designation of Russian SZ
So, the thread parameters on the body are indicated by the first letter symbol “A”, which hides the parameters M14x1.25 - the value that distinguishes “standard” type spark plugs. Marking of devices with the M symbol assumes thread parameters M18x1.5 (key for installation/disassembly 27).
The letter symbol is followed by a number indicating the heat indicator - the higher this value, the lower the temperature required to form a spark. The heat index of domestic candles is in the range of 8-26. The most common candlesticks are 11/14/17. SZ marking according to the heat value divides products into “cold”, installed on high-power motors or “hot”.
Marking of Russian candles
Let's look at an example of what values are included in the Russian-made SZ marking . Let's take a product marked with code A 17 DV - this is a candle with a classic thread, heat index 17, thread length (D) 9 mm (if this value is less, then the symbol is not affixed to the marking), symbol B usually denotes an insulator with a protruding thermal tip.
If the product marking contains the letter symbol P (A17 DVR), this means that the head electrode is equipped with a resistor that suppresses interference. The letter symbol M indicates the use of copper materials with high heat resistance, which contributes to the creation of the shell on the head element.
In the designation AU 17 DVRM, the letter symbol U indicates an increased hexagon size (16mm instead of 14). With an even larger hexagon size (19mm), the letter symbol M - AM 17 B is marked.
Examples of possible designations of domestic products with interpretation
A 11 is a basic product with an M14x1.25 thread, a 20.8mm hexagon, a heat index of 11, a thread length of 12.7mm, a non-protruding heat cone, without a resistor, a head electrode made of heat-resistant material.
A 11 R is an analogue of the previous sample, which has a built-in resistor.
Spark plug parameters
A 17 DV is a basic type product with an M14x1.25 thread, a 20.8mm hexagon, a heat value of 17, a thread size of 19mm, there is a thermal protruding cone, without a resistor, a head electrode made of a heat-resistant alloy.
A 17 DV-10 is a product similar to the previous sample (A 17 DV), which has an increased spark gap (0.7mm - in the basic design this value is 0.5mm).
AU 17 DVRM is a basic type element, thread M14x1.25, hexagon 16mm, heat value 17, thread size 19mm, a heat cone protrudes from the body, with a resistor and a head electrode in a heat-resistant shell made of copper alloy.
Pros and cons of iridium spark plugs
Companies that produce vehicles do not forget to work on improving the operation of such an important part as the spark plug. The technical characteristics of the candles and their service life depend on the quality of the material used.
Innovative technologies have made it possible to use iridium in candles. Its alloy is used in the manufacture of central electrodes for spark plugs. The core in iridium spark plugs is small, smaller than in similar spark plugs. The use of such spark plugs allows the engine to develop maximum permissible power.
Laser welding is used to weld the iridium tip to the electrode circumference. This candle is very reliable.
Iridium spark plugs improve engine economics. The smaller the center electrode of the spark plug, the better the engine performance.
The advantages of such candles are obvious. Their advantages:
- The power of the engine used is increased by up to four percent.
- The engine starts easily and simply even at low temperatures.
- Less fuel is consumed. Save up to seven percent.
- The service life of candles increases almost three times.
They also have their disadvantages.
Applied technologies and their features
In the production of Akom batteries, modern calcium technology is used, designated as follows: Ca-Ca, or Calcium-Calcium. Its essence is that calcium, not antimony, is added to lead during the manufacture of electrodes. The latter is not used at all in the production of Akom. This makes the products safer for humans and the environment, and the batteries more reliable. This technology increases the strength and durability of the product, reduces fluid consumption, and increases resistance to deep discharge.
Expanded Metal Technology Ca/Ca
Also, in the manufacture of gratings, instead of casting, rolling technology is used. This protects the plates from wear, oxidation and corrosion, and increases current characteristics.
The starting power of Akom batteries is higher than that of classic batteries, and they are also easier to start at sub-zero temperatures. The equipment is resistant to self-discharge and overcharging.
All Akom battery models are maintenance-free. The operating level of the electrolyte remains unchanged when used correctly for three years. It does not boil over (if the voltage does not exceed 16 V), there is no need to remove the lid and add water.
Domestic or foreign, how to choose?
Different types of protective equipment from one manufacturer
Candles from foreign manufacturers do not have specific labeling requirements. Russian products must contain symbols indicating the following information:
- name of the manufacturer or company logo;
- date of manufacture;
- designation “made in Russia” or RUS;
- markings that comply with state standards.
Foreign candles are marked according to a similar principle to domestic devices. However, their designation is deciphered differently. Products of different brands, for example “BRISK” and “NGK” with the same parameters have different designations. The lack of generally accepted labeling standards significantly complicates the selection of an analogue
To choose the right SZ, you should use the table of interchangeability of spark plugs or pay attention to the packaging of the spark plug, it contains information indicating for which types of engines the SZ is suitable
Table. Selection of the main types of protective equipment from different brands based on compatibility.
If it is impossible to find an analogue for candles, then a dash is placed in the table.
Distinctive features of cuts produced in Russia
Distinctive features of candles:
